Synthetic biology offers a different approach: rather than screening libraries of compounds, scientists can design and build new proteins that specifically target the disease-causing protein. These new proteins can be more effective and have fewer side effects than traditional drugs.
Another area where synthetic biology is making an impact is in the production of chemicals. Many of the chemicals we use in everyday life, such as plastics and fuels, are currently produced from fossil fuels. This process is not sustainable in the long term, and it also contributes to climate change. Synthetic biologists are working to create new biological systems that can produce these chemicals from renewable resources, such as plants or algae. This could lead to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way of producing these important chemicals.
Of course, as with any new technology, there are concerns about the potential risks and ethical implications of synthetic biology.
