April 2025 Skywatching Tips
April 3, 2025
April 2025 offers a spectacular array of celestial events for skywatchers, from planetary alignments to meteor showers. Visible for a few days in the second half of April, Mercury can be spotted extremely low in the eastern sky just before sunrise. A clear horizon will be essential for viewing this elusive planet. Having transitioned to a morning object, Venus rises low in the east before dawn. Its brightness makes it a stunning sight, climbing higher each morning throughout the month. The red planet Mars is a prominent feature in the night sky, visible high overhead after dark. It sets a couple of hours after midnight, making it an excellent target for evening observation. Shining brightly in the western sky after sunset, Jupiter sets a few hours later, offering a perfect opportunity for early evening viewing. Appearing low in the eastern sky before dawn in the latter half of April, Saturn adds to the morning celestial lineup.
On April 1 and 30th, Jupiter pairs with the crescent Moon in the western sky as darkness falls. This charming duo sets about three hours after sunset. April 4 and 5th: The Moon, in its first quarter phase, appears near Mars for two consecutive nights, creating a striking visual. On April 24-25, a rare grouping of Venus, Saturn, and the crescent Moon graces the eastern sky before dawn. Mercury may also be visible below them for those with an unobstructed view of the horizon.
The Lyrid meteor shower peaks around April 22-23 with minimal moonlight interference. For those with telescopes or binoculars, April is an excellent time to hunt for the globular cluster M3, located in the constellation Canes Venatici.
