August 2024 Skywatching Tips

August 2, 2024

August is a fantastic month for stargazing, and this year promises some spectacular celestial events that will delight both amateur and seasoned sky watchers. One of the highlights of the month is the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks on the night of August 12th and the early hours of August 13th. The Perseids are renowned for their bright meteors and high activity rate. Under ideal conditions, you might see up to 60 meteors per hour. This year, the shower benefits from a waning crescent moon, meaning the sky will be dark enough to see even the faintest meteors. For the best view, find a location away from city lights and give your eyes about 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness. Learn more at NASA Skywatching.
