January 2024 Skywatching Tips

January 4, 2024

January nighttime skywatching highlights include the Quadrantid meteor shower that peaks overnight and into the morning of the 4th. Just before sunrise on January 8 look for Venus rising with a crescent Moon in the southeast about an hour before sunrise. The Moon will appear very close to bright red star Antares, appearing to pass in front of the star for observers in parts of the Western United States. Planet Mercury is also visible, low in the southeast. In mid January see the crescent Moon together with Saturn and Jupiter. Learn more about What's Up in January at NASA.
