JWST Captures Serpens Nebula

July 5, 2024

The Serpens Nebula is located approximately 1,300 light-years away from Earth. NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has captured a groundbreaking image of the Serpens Nebula using its Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). The image reveals aligned protostellar outflows, indicating that young stars in this region rotate similarly as they form. This alignment supports long-standing theories about star formation. The image also shows jets of gas and dust from newborn stars, which previously appeared as mere blobs in other observations. These findings provide deeper insights into the early stages of star and planet formation. Learn more at NASA - First of Its Kind Detection Made in Striking New Webb Image.
