Low Power AI Cameras
March 21, 2025
The OpenMV N6 and AE3 AI cameras have advanced machine vision capabilities combined with low power consumption and real-time AI processing. The OpenMV N6 is the most powerful camera in the OpenMV lineup, equipped with a STM32N6 microcontroller with an integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of running AI models like YOLO at over 30 frames per second. It supports up to 5 MP cameras with a global shutter for high-speed image capture. This camera system has built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and Gigabit Ethernet for seamless integration and it consumes less than 0.75W during operation, making it suitable for battery-powered applications.
The OpenMV AE3 is a smaller, ultra-efficient option, with an Alif Ensemble E3 microcontroller with dual Ethos-U55 NPUs for AI acceleration. A compact size of one square inch form factor, perfect for space-constrained projects. IT operates at just 0.25W during active use and under 2.5mW in deep sleep, enabling years of battery life. Sensors include an IMU, microphone, and an 8×8 distance sensor for enhanced functionality.
Both the N6 and AE3 run MicroPython, allowing users to develop AI-powered applications with simple Python scripts. The OpenMV IDE provides an intuitive platform for loading AI models, debugging scripts, and visualizing real-time video feeds. With built-in AI model deployment tools, even beginners can quickly get started with machine vision projects.
