Modular 3D Scanner

March 21, 2024

In a nutshell, 3D mapping is like taking a photograph, but instead of a flat image, you end up with a 3D model that you can explore from every angle. It creates digital representations of areas, including buildings, landscapes, and even entire cities, in three dimensions.

LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a key player in making 3D mapping possible. It works by sending out thousands of laser pulses every second and measuring how long it takes for each to bounce back. This data is then used to create incredibly detailed 3D maps of the environment. LiDAR can capture the size, shape, and even the texture of objects, making it invaluable for a wide range of applications.

SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) is the brains behind the operation, allowing devices to understand and navigate their environment in real-time. SLAM algorithms help robots and autonomous vehicles figure out where they are on the map, even as they're creating it. This is crucial for robots exploring unknown terrains or self-driving cars navigating busy streets.

Nexys is a modular 3D mapping and surveying ecosystem that can be operated as a handheld device or from a backpack. When mounted on a drone or moving robot, this 3D scanner can operate with autonomous capabilities, while it is scanning. With Nexys, you can see the captured data in full detail and colorization, to make sure the scan is correct and complete before you finish scanning. The Nexys comes with a ruggedized Dell Latitude tablet to plan and monitor 3D scanning projects.
