October 2023 Skywatching Tips

October 1, 2023

The highlight of the month will be a "ring of fire" annular solar eclipse of the Sun on October 14. It is called an annular eclipse because the Moon blocks out the Sun, but not completely since the Moon is further away then in a total solar eclipse. For those in just the right location on Earth, this makes a bright ring of sunlight visible around the Moon’s edges. The viewing path of the eclipse is about 125 miles wide and it will sweep across the Americas, beginning in Southern Canada and crossing the Western U.S., before moving across Central and South America. Outside the annular eclipse path, those within the viewing zone will still see a partial eclipse. Learn more at NASA.
