Palm-Sized Two-Wheeled Robot

April 18, 2025

The micro:bit XGO-Rider from Elecfreaks is a programmable two-wheeled robot powered by the ESP32 microcontroller. This microcontroller integrates Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, enabling wireless communication. The robot is equipped with a Type-C fast charging interface and dip switches, which simplify user configuration and charging. Additionally, its internal IMU sensor ensures adaptability and stability across various terrains, enhancing its usability in diverse environments.

One of the most impressive aspects of the XGO-Rider is its movement capabilities. It utilizes 4.5KG.CM all-metal magnetic encoding bus serial port servos as joints and integrated brushless wheel hub motors for driving. This combination allows for 360-degree full-range flexible movement, stable posture control, and the execution of complex movements. The robot's wheel-legged design incorporates high-lifespan brushless motors with built-in control circuitry, supporting a peak output torque of up to 2kg·cm.

The XGO-Rider features support for MakeCode graphical programming and MicroBlocks. These platforms are particularly suited for children and beginners, providing an accessible entry point into the world of coding. For more advanced users, the robot opens up its underlying serial port protocol and Python interface, enabling secondary development and customization. Control options for the XGO-Rider include remote operation of the robot via Wifi using the XGO mobile app, and Bluetooth for game controllers. The robot's extended battery life provides over three hours of operation without recharging.
