Starburst Galaxy

April 16, 2024

Messier 82 (M82), also known as the Cigar Galaxy due to its distinctive shape, is one of the most fascinating subjects in the realm of extragalactic astronomy. Located about 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major, M82 is part of the M81 galaxy group and is a prime example of a starburst galaxy. This type of galaxy is characterized by an exceptionally high rate of star formation, significantly higher than that of a typical galaxy. A team of astronomers has recently used NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to survey the starburst galaxy Messier 82 (M82). Learn more about the M82 starburst galaxy at NASA.
