High-Altitude Communication Platforms
Rather than being a low-Earth-orbit satellite, this high-altitude platform station is designed to operate in the stratosphere, where it can remain above a region and carry communications or sensing equipment. From this altitude, it could function somewhat like an extremely tall cell tower, potentially providing broadband and cellular connectivity across large areas without constructing thousands of towers on the ground. Solar power and rechargeable batteries can provide energy for long-duration operation.
High-altitude communication platforms could be particularly valuable for rural communities, remote regions, and areas affected by natural disasters, where conventional communication infrastructure may be unavailable or damaged. They could complement fiber-optic networks, terrestrial cell towers, and low-Earth-orbit satellite constellations rather than completely replacing them. The same platforms can also carry cameras and environmental sensors.
