Selfie drones and intelligent cameras could change the way people take photos and videos by turning the camera into an autonomous photographer.
Instead of holding a phone or using a selfie stick, a small flying camera can follow a person while using computer vision and AI to keep them centered in the frame. Some selfie drones can recognize faces and bodies, track moving subjects, avoid obstacles, and automatically perform cinematic movements such as orbiting around a person or gradually flying away for a wide-angle shot.
Future models could become smaller, quieter, and safer, with improved batteries and obstacle-detection sensors allowing them to operate with less attention from the user. Similar AI technology is appearing in stationary and wearable cameras, which could automatically choose camera angles, recognize important moments, stabilize video, and edit the best clips together.
Eventually, personal cameras may behave less like devices we manually operate and more like robotic camera operators, following us during sports, travel, family activities, and other experiences while deciding for themselves how to capture the best shot.
