Robot lawn mowers are becoming the outdoor equivalent of robotic vacuum cleaners, automatically maintaining a lawn while the homeowner spends time on other things.
Early models often required a buried boundary wire to keep them on the grass, but newer machines can create virtual boundaries using RTK satellite positioning, LiDAR, cameras, and AI-powered computer vision. These technologies allow a mower to map a yard, follow organized cutting patterns, recognize lawn edges, and avoid obstacles such as trees, furniture, toys, and pets; some newer models combine several navigation methods for better reliability.
When the battery becomes low, the mower can return to its charging station automatically and then continue mowing later. Future robot mowers could become even more autonomous, using AI to recognize different types of grass, adjust cutting height and schedules according to growth and weather conditions, navigate complicated yards, and perhaps work with other smart-home and garden devices.
Because they can trim small amounts of grass frequently instead of waiting for the lawn to become tall, robotic mowers could turn lawn care from a weekend chore into an almost invisible automated service. As navigation, safety systems, and prices improve, having a small autonomous robot taking care of the yard could eventually become as ordinary as having a dishwasher or robotic vacuum inside the home.
