NASA is taking another major step toward establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon by developing a new generation of advanced lunar rovers designed to explore, transport astronauts, and support the construction of a future Moon Base.
These electric-powered rovers will initially be remotely operated from Earth, traveling up to 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) per day to map the lunar surface, investigate terrain conditions, and identify suitable areas for future exploration. Once astronauts arrive, the vehicles will transport crews across the Moon’s rugged landscape, carrying up to 176 pounds (80 kilograms) of scientific equipment, tools, and lunar samples while traveling as far as 6 miles (10 kilometers) on a single battery charge.
As robotic navigation, autonomous driving, battery technology, and lunar resource exploration continue to advance, these rovers could become essential tools for building and maintaining humanity’s first long-term lunar outpost, helping transform the Moon from a destination for short visits into a place where astronauts can live, work, and conduct scientific research for extended periods.
