Always On AI Agents

Always-on AI agents could change artificial intelligence from something we deliberately open and ask questions into a persistent digital assistant that continuously works in the background.

With a user’s permission, an AI agent could monitor selected information such as calendars, messages, projects, smart-home sensors, travel plans, or business systems and take action when something important happens. Instead of repeatedly asking an assistant to check an airline flight, for example, an agent could watch for schedule changes, notify the traveler, compare alternatives, and help reorganize plans. Future agents could also coordinate with other AI systems and physical robots, allowing an instruction such as “keep the house running while I’m away” to involve security cameras, appliances, energy systems, deliveries, and a home robot.

This could make computing more proactive rather than reactive, but an AI that operates continuously also creates significant questions about privacy, cybersecurity, reliability, and control. People will need clear ways to determine what an agent can see, remember, share, purchase, or change, with important actions requiring human approval and detailed records showing what the AI has done. If those safeguards develop alongside the technology, always-on agents could eventually function less like individual apps and more like personal digital managers that understand our goals and quietly coordinate technology on our behalf.
