Autonomous ride-hailing services are transforming urban transportation by allowing passengers to request a vehicle through a smartphone app and travel to their destination without a human driver behind the wheel. Often called robotaxis, these vehicles use a combination of artificial intelligence, cameras, radar, LiDAR sensors, GPS, and sophisticated onboard computers to understand their surroundings, identify pedestrians and other vehicles, recognize traffic signals, and navigate city streets.
Unlike conventional ride-sharing services, where a human driver accepts a trip request, autonomous vehicles rely on AI-powered driving systems to plan routes, make decisions, and respond to changing road conditions. Current robotaxi services generally operate within designated geographic areas and under specific operating conditions, rather than offering unrestricted travel everywhere.
Electric robotaxi fleets could also reduce local vehicle emissions, particularly when charged using renewable energy. One of the most promising benefits is improved mobility for older adults, people with disabilities, and individuals who cannot drive, although vehicles must be designed with accessibility in mind. Autonomous ride-hailing could eventually become part of an integrated transportation network, connecting passengers with buses, trains, airports, and other public transit services.
