AI could improve rapidly and affect nearly every part of society, including employment, education, healthcare, agriculture, scientific research, and eventually physical work through robotics. AI could accelerate discoveries in medicine and clean energy, provide better educational tools, help farmers, improve government services, and make professional expertise available to people who cannot currently afford it.
At the same time, the transition could be unusually disruptive. Permanent job displacement, AI-assisted cybercrime and misinformation, surveillance, and the possibility that excessive dependence on AI could negatively affect children’s social development and critical-thinking skills.
