Smart electric vehicles could change transportation by combining compact EV design with software, connectivity, AI, and greater levels of automated driving. Small electric vehicles designed specifically for short local trips such as going to school, shopping, visiting friends, or traveling around a neighborhood.
Vehicles like this point toward a future where transportation may become more specialized: instead of using a large, heavy automobile for every journey, people could use smaller electric vehicles optimized for the short trips that make up much of everyday travel. With autonomous driving, these vehicles could drop passengers off, find their own parking, pick up groceries, or provide transportation for people who cannot drive, while using less energy and physical space than conventional SUVs.
