Hywind Scotland is the world’s first floating wind farm

October 22, 2017

Hywind Scotland is the first floating wind farm in the world. The 30 megawatt wind farm is located 25 kilometers offshore Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and will power approximately 20,000 households.

A floating wind farm is a group of offshore wind turbines mounted on floating structures that can generate electricity in water depths where bottom-mounted towers are not feasible. Locating wind farms out at sea can reduce their environmental impact, when compared to a land-based wind park. In addition, the wind is typically more consistent and stronger over the sea, due to the absence of topographic features that disrupt wind flow.
